GSU and SSU/UIS - Parallel Histories

Governors State University (GSU) and Sangamon State University (SSU) were both created by the Illinois General Assembly in 1969 to offer upper-division baccalaureate and masters degrees.

Sangamon State University:
  • Fall 1995 - transition to University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS)
  • Fall 1998 - first fully online baccalaureate degree-completion and masters degree programs
  • Fall 2001 - Capital Scholars Program (residential freshmen)
  • Current enrollment of approximately 5000 (headcount)
  • One University Plaza, Springfield, Illinois
Governors State University
  • Current enrollment of approximately 7800 (headcount)
  • One University Parkway, University Park, Illinois
